SUSTAINABILITY

(Re)Framing the fundamentals

Sustainability, a term that is overused but rarely embodied. A word that echoes endless potential and promises for a greener planet, that invokes positivity and optimism. But also challenges some of the most deeply ingrained parts of our human existence.

In our office we believe that we can support each other in this process. Every person, every brand and every organization can make a positive contribution to the world.  We all can become part of this great tapestry of ambitious change-makers that fight for a sustainable and liveable planet. Using our own unique bodies, minds, wisdom, skills and talents to build new paths for the future.

Let’s not make this sustainability story even bigger and more complex than it already is. Showing only numbers, figures and vague graphics is not what we are here for. But we love to share what has helped us create a new landscape of hope and renewal in the furniture design industry. How we change things for the better. From the big thinking to the nitty gritty steps.

Strategy & Goals

Impact is the name of the game. Every day we choose again to commit to what we are here for: creating structural change in the furniture design business. And we don’t take this task lightly. Our main goal is to limit our negative impact on the environment as much as possible by (1) minimizing our use of (primary) raw materials and (2) decrease our company wide CO2 emissions to a necessary minimum. Simultaneously we strive towards making a substantial positive impact by making contributions to forest management, biodiversity and (local) climate organizations. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are our source of inspiration.

The framework

(Re)Framing the fundamentals. Occony works with our homegrown ‘impact framework’ that carries forward every new project or design and is based on the Circularity Deck (a scientific approach) of Jan Konietzko. An instrument that produces the sounds for a 'better' environmental performance and helps sharpen our voice in this worldwide conversation. Its bass chord is a tool called LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) that objectively measures the impact of products and human activities on the environment throughout the supply chain. It is expected that this method will establish itself (in Europe) as the new standard for such measurements in the coming years. Something we strongly support and are very excited about.

From the initial designs and choosing raw materials to the collaborations and production chain itself; these are the five fundamental pillars that change the way we work.

Less

Distances (keep it local), virgin materials, non-renewable energy, weight and packaging.

Longer

Optimal service life, timeless design, remountable and service & repair.

Again

Relocate, reuse, refurbish, recycle, bio-based where nature is leading.

Clean

Clean energy and materials, VOC and formaldehyde free, non-toxic components and biophilic design.

Inform

Product- and process transparency, data- en supply chain management and end-of-life take back.

Are we there yet?

We have a clear focal point on the horizon that helps us to shine brighter with every step we take. To keep following the path of sustainability and strive towards becoming a completely Co2-neutral brand. To give back to the places and people where we as an industry have been taken too much. And to support new growth and abundance not just for us, but for the planet as a whole. If all is executed well, we work towards a perfect LCA-score which basically means there’s zero negative impact on our natural environment. Zero!

Now is the turning point, now is Occony.
